When Busoni returned to creative work over June and July the Sonatina seconda poured forth in a spontaneous rush--most of its material, its "language of terror," became part of the opening scene of Doktor Faust in which three students from Cracow appear to the weird march, heard after the Sonatina's initial volatile flourishes, to present Faust with the magic book from which he will conjure devils.

The most cogent example of this occurs in the Sonatina Ad usum infantis, where Pöntinen softens the polonaise rhythms so that they sound convincingly wistful and reflective. In the Fourth Sonatina’s central section he achieves ravishing pedal effects that magically illuminate Busoni’s quasi-impressionist harmonic vocabulary.

As with many musical terms, sonatina is used inconsistently. The most common meaning is a short, easy sonata suitable for students, such as the piano sonatinas of taibuycheicugecanworkmenbeausefalri.coinfor, by no means are all sonatinas technically undemanding, for example the virtuoso sonatinas of Busoni and Alkan, and the Sonatine of Ravel, whose title reflects its neo-classical quality.
